VIN Decoder Lookup

VIN Decoder Lookup

Decodes each VIN against the NHTSA vPIC catalog and screens it against the three vehicle-side tests in section 163(h)(4): U.S. final assembly, GVWR under 14,000 lb, and qualifying vehicle class.

Vehicles to look up

Paste one VIN per line, or load a CSV. If you load a CSV, every original column is kept and the decoded fields are appended to the right.

NHTSA accepts 50 VINs per request, so longer lists are sent in batches of 50 and paced to stay inside the rate limit. A 300-VIN list takes about ten seconds; leave the tab open until the progress bar finishes.

What this screen does and does not decide

A clear result here means the vehicle carries no disqualifier that the VIN can reveal. It does not mean the loan qualifies. The loan-level tests live in the origination file, not the VIN: originated after December 31, 2024, proceeds used to purchase rather than refinance a pre-2025 loan, the credit union holds a first lien, original use began with the borrower so the vehicle is genuinely new, and the borrower's use is personal rather than business. Negative equity rolled into the note has its own allocation problem. None of that is visible here.

Plant country is what the manufacturer submitted to NHTSA under 49 CFR Part 565, and the IRS has pointed taxpayers at this same decoder. The first character of the VIN is not the same thing — it identifies the world manufacturer, which frequently differs from where the vehicle was actually assembled. The window sticker remains the primary source; this is corroboration.

Rows marked for manual review are mostly one of three things: a Class 3 GVWR range whose upper bound touches 14,000 lb, a vehicle typed as a truck whose body class does not clearly say pickup, or a record where the manufacturer never submitted plant detail for that VIN pattern. Resolve those against the door jamb label or the window sticker rather than assuming either way.

vPIC covers model year 1981 forward. Including a model year column improves decode accuracy on VINs where the 10th character is ambiguous across a 30-year cycle; the tool picks one up automatically if your file has it.
